Kraft’s newest product announcement dumbfounds customers: ‘I’m going to be seriously ill’

Kraft has partnered with Van Leeuwen to release a limited-edition mac and cheese-flavored ice cream in honor of National Macaroni and Cheese Day, which is on July 14.

Kraft wanted to bring together two of life’s greatest comfort foods: macaroni and cheese and ice cream. The brand teamed up with Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen to make macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream without artificial flavors, preservatives or dyes.

“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese we all grew up with,” said Emily Violett, Senior Associate Brand Manager for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

’Honesty Time’ Are these products all hype or actually worth the $$$?

The new flavor will be available at all Van Leeuwen stores and online for $12 a pint.

What does it actually taste like?

On the day of the launch, Union Square also hosted an ice cream truck, offering samples of the coveted flavor.

So, my coworkers and dearest friends — Kelsey (who is allergic to everything), Mark (whose diet is mostly barbecue Pop Chips), Alex (who described this as the “mid-afternoon pick-me-up” she needed, despite it being almost first thing in the morning) — and I stood in line with dozens of influencers at 11 a.m. to try it out ourselves.

I had high expectations and frankly wasn’t turned off by the combination — unlike some coworkers who refused to join us.

It’s two dairy products mashed together — what could possibly go wrong?

The ice cream itself vaguely smelled cheesy, and the coloring was exactly the same as the cheese sauce you make when cooking a batch of Kraft’s mac and cheese.

It tastes amazing. It really does taste like frozen mac and cheese juice — but in a good way. Alex made the point that you could microwave this ice cream and drizzle it on macaroni and nobody would know the difference.

The after-effects were a little concerning — I could feel the ghost of mac and cheese sitting in my esophagus, and also, I really wanted a nap.

I checked in with everyone else an hour or two after we’d eaten.

Kelsey: “I feel like I’m going to be seriously ill in about 10 minutes.”

Alex: “I need a NAP, but that might just be from the heat and from the fact that social interaction is hard these days.”

Mark: “I feel like I ate cheesecake* and I’m pretty sure it was just one scoop.”

*It did not taste like cheesecake.

Should you try the macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream?

I can’t imagine a rom-com character eating a whole pint of this while dealing with a breakup or choosing this flavor when grabbing a midafternoon treat at the beach, but I think if you’re in the mood to try macaroni and cheese ice cream, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how good this is.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the show with these rich and easy to make snacks!
