Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, top 2018 QBs, sign in early signing period

Clemson and Georgia each have another highly touted quarterback commitment.

Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 quarterback and overall recruit in the class of 2018 and also the recruit with the best hair, signed with Clemson on Wednesday.

Wednesday is the first day of college football’s early signing period.

Lawrence could enroll at Clemson in January as an early-enrollee. With Kelly Bryant entrenched as Clemson’s starter, Lawrence probably won’t compete for the starting job right away. But his arrival is yet another example of the strong recruiting Clemson has done over the last few years as the Tigers are making a third-straight College Football Playoff appearance.

Justin Fields, the top dual-threat quarterback and the No. 2 quarterback in the country according to Rivals, signed with the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel wrote about Fields, who has drawn comparisons to Cam Newton, earlier this summer.

The five-star quarterback had previously verbally committed to Georgia, so his signing with the school isn’t a total surprise. But his impending arrival makes Georgia’s quarterback situation even more crowded entering the 2018 season. At least at the moment.

Jacob Eason, who started as a freshman in 2016 after he signed with Georgia as a five-star recruit, entered the season as a starter. But he suffered a knee injury in the team’s season-opener against Appalachian State. Enter freshman Jake Fromm, another five-star recruit at the time of his signing, who took over the starting job after Eason’s injury.

Eason has served as the backup to Fromm since he’s been healthy. Fromm’s only loss as a starter came at Auburn in November as the Bulldogs are set to meet Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal.

Fields’ signing wasn’t the only big one Georgia got Wednesday morning as Jamaree Salyer, the No. 1 guard in the class of 2018 and a five-star recruit, signed with the Bulldogs too.
