Trending video swells price of used 1996 Honda Accord to $20K and rising

The Interweb: It works in mysterious ways.

"My girlfriend needs to sell her car," begins a video, posted to YouTube on Thursday. "To help her, I made this commercial."

The car is a green, 1996 Honda Accord EX coupe with 141,095 miles on the odometer, initially listed on eBay with a starting price of $499. But since the video was uploaded Thursday, it caught fire on Reddit and rocketed to the top 10 trending videos on YouTube, where it had more than 540,000 views as this was written. And wouldn't you know it, that Internet vitality seems to have affected the asking price, which had climbed to an astonishing $20,600 after 88 bids, with nearly six full days left to go. That's nearly the price of a brand-new 2018 Accord, which starts at $23,570.

The video, by Los Angeles-based writer and director Max Lanman, absolutely justifies the proverbial 10 minutes of Internet fame. It looks almost exactly like any modern commercial for Lexus, BMW or Cadillac — albeit a lot more irreverent — with drone footage of the used car navigating winding oceanside cliffs and a buttery voiceover saying things like "You do things your own way," and "This is not a car. This is you: A lifestyle. A choice. Your choice." It shows a driver — we're not sure whether it's the actual Accord owner or an actor — riding with her cat and a coffeemaker riding shotgun. "Luxury is a state of mind," the voiceover concludes.

As for the car itself, it's got beige leather seats, cassette player (remember those?), sunroof and a four-cylinder 2.2-liter VTEC engine powering the front-wheel-drive automatic transmission. "'Greenie is a treasure," the description reads. "The original paint is in fantastic shape save for a few cosmetic dings (see photos). Drives like a dream. Leather seats are in great condition."

But still, 20 grand for a 21-year-old car with that many miles on it? It reminds us of this totally credible-but-fake ad for a 1996 Suzuki Vitara (aka Sidekick) that hit it big earlier this year.
