The Trailer For Jordan Peele's 'Candyman' Already Looks Like the Scariest Movie of 2020
After decades of Saw-like torture, filmmakers have finally figured out how to resurrect our favorite horror movie villains. Case in point: 2018’s Halloween, which showed that you can just ignore all the meh sequels and reboot the franchise with a direct follow-up to the original.
Next monster up? Candyman. Audiences first met the hook-handed urban legend in 1992, as he stalked a grad student working on a thesis about… urban legends. At the time, the film was praised for its look at race and social class in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green projects. And in September, we found out that Jordan Peele would produce a sequel to the 1992 film (ignoring its sequels, a la 2018’s Halloween), with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and the original Candyman actor, Tony Todd, returning.
And, wouldn’t you know it, the man who brought us Get Out and Us, looks like he’s about to bring us another culture-rippling horror hit this summer. The first Candyman trailer is a brilliant gorefest. It follows Abdul-Mateen II’s character, who’s a visual artist, as he moves into the now-gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood, and seems to resurrect Candyman in the process. The screaming-dragging-and-bee-swarming is set to a slowed-down, scary remix of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name”—one year after Peele gave the same treatment to one-time song of the summer “I Got 5 On It” in Us.
We’ll see Candyman when it hits theaters on June 12—which will likely see Peele and director Nia DaCosta take on gentrification and Chicago’s still-high crime rate through the eyes of Candyman. Just like Todd, who talked to Nightmare on Film Street about Peele producing the reboot, we’re happy that the horror master is behind the wheel.
“I’d rather have [Peele] do it, someone with intelligence, who’s going to be thoughtful and dig into the whole racial makeup of who Candyman is and why he existed in the first place,” Todd said.
