Hard-boiled eggs, egg products recalled from Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe's, more for listeria risk

More hard-boiled eggs and egg products are being recalled from stores nationwide related to a deadly listeria outbreak.

Nearly 80 different hard-boiled egg varieties sold by more than 30 brands have been recalled by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia, according to a recall notice on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration site due to risk of listeria contamination.

Listeria can cause serious and at times deadly infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

On Thursday, Reichel Foods Inc. announced the recall of Pro2Snax to the Max snack kits containing hard-boiled eggs products and on Christmas Eve, Great American Deli of Ooltewah, Tennessee, recalled egg sandwiches in 21 states.

Trader Joe's Egg Salad in 6-ounce quantities, as well as 20-ounce containers of Trader Joe's Old Fashioned Potato Salad dated for use through Dec. 27, are being voluntarily pulled from the shelves by Bakkavor Foods USA, according to a recall notice.

Almark is at the center of a multistate outbreak that the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and health officials announced Dec. 18, which sickened seven people in five states. One death has been reported and four people have been hospitalized with illnesses starting on dates ranging from April 10, 2017 to Nov. 12, 2019.

Almark recalled 20, 23, and 25 pound plastic pails of eggs "sold primarily to further processing plants of egg products and restaurant chain suppliers," according to a Dec. 20 recall notice.

Almark expanded the recall Dec. 23 to include products sold directly to consumers with “Best If Used By” dates up through March 2, 2020..

A full list of recalled products was posted on the FDA website and includes hard-boiled eggs and cooked egg products sold under the following brand names: Eggland's Best, Kirkland Signature, Great Value, Fresh Thyme, Everyday Essentials, Food Club, Fresh Thyme, Giant Eagle and Great Day.

Those who are healthy but become ill may experience high fever, severe headaches, nausea and other symptoms. Listeria can also cause pregnant women to miscarry or to have a stillbirth.

According to the recall, customers who have purchased these products are urged to "immediately discard and not consume the products." For questions, call Almark Foods’ Customer Helpline at 877-546-0454 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

On Thursday, the FDA said in an an investigation update Thursday that Almark Foods is no longer producing products.

Trader Joe's recall

The Trader Joe's products may have been contaminated by broken egg white products, supplied by Almark, which may have contained Listeria monocytogenes, the recall notice says.

The egg and potato salad products were sent to Trader Joe's markets throughout the U.S. The affected states are Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont and Wisconsin. The products were also delivered to stores in Washington, D.C.

If you have purchased one of these items, company officials say to toss it immediately or take it back to where you bought it and receive a full refund.

The Fresh Market also announced Tuesday on its website the recall of select products that contained eggs from Almark.

Great American Deli recall

Great American Deli of Ooltewah, Tennessee is recalling 4.8-ounce "GAD #114 Egg Salad Sandwich" with UPC code 7-41431-00114-2, according to a recall notice.

Affected lots are 19094, 19107, 19129, 19155, 19158, 19218, 19237, 19259, 19274, 19297, 19304, 19310, 19322 and 19336.

According to the notice, the sandwiches could have been delivered in the following states through convenience stores, micro markets and vending machines: Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

"Consumers who have purchased the affected sandwiches are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund," the notice states. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-343-1327 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

'Pro2Snax To The Max' recall

Reichel Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling "Pro2Snax To The Max Granny Apples /Hard Boiled Egg/Cheddar/Cashew & Craisin" and "Pro2Snax To The Max Gala Apples/Hard Boiled Egg/White Cheddar/Almond & Craisin." The products were distributed nationwide, according to the recall notice.

Dierbergs Markets' recall

St. Louis-based Dierbergs Markets is recalling various products in its 25 stores located in Missouri and Illinois, according to the recall notice, which lists the affected products.
