The designs include sloths, Santas, a seasonal red truck, and more.
‘Tis the season for advent calendars, and Trader Joe’s is not here to disappoint.
The beloved grocer knows what shoppers want—and that is a little chocolate treat for the 24 days of December leading up to Christmas. Trader Joe's has sold their chocolatey advent calendars each year since the 1990s, and each of the whimsical wintry designs are created by the package designers that put together all of our other favorite items.

“And this isn’t throwaway chocolate here, folks,” Trader Joe’s website reads. “The seasonally-shaped milk chocolates in our Chocolate Advent Calendars are made with a generous amount of melt-in-your-mouth cocoa butter.”
This year’s designs include at least five different boxes to choose from. Among them: a jolly Santa baking holiday cookies, a red truck bringing a tree home and the words “over the river and through the woods,” sloths and gingerbread men, prim and proper nutcrackers, and a sweet Christmas village (complete with a Trader Joe’s). Each costs just $1.29, so you can also get a couple for your friends and make it a group activity—or get all five for yourself.
Not all the designs are totally new—it appears the sloths were also featured in 2021—but they’re all certainly playful. In the past, fans have celebrated with advent calendars that feature row houses and a giant tree with an angel on top. One year, the design boasted “the most wonderful time of the year” with a collage similar to the design of your favorite Trader Joe’s reusable bag.
If chocolates aren’t your favorite however, you might soon have other choices. The chain has previously offered a “boozy” chocolate advent calendar (originally released in 2020, featuring Cocktail Hour Chocolate Truffles in flavors like Egg Nog and Coffee Martini), along with dog and cat treat calendars that allow your furry family members to partake in the festivities. There’s even been a self-care version for the skincare obsessed.
In the Trader Joe's Reddit channel, a thread posted by @talkingdodobird posed the question of what the "dream Trader Joe's" advent calendar would be. Ideas included a 12-day edition with the best-selling sweet of each month, one with only discounted products, different types of cheeses, and "just a kimbap behind every door."
