Summer might still be (thankfully) underway, but we're already seeing newsy items about September's New York Fashion Week coming our way—and one blurb in particular is all sorts of good news. This fall, Torrid, which designs for sizes 10-30, will be the first plus-size line to ever show at NYFW, according to WWD.
We already have lots of details about the runway show: it's scheduled to take place September 12. And, like the other designers showing at NYFW, Torrid will show its Spring 2018 collection of 40 looks, from rock 'n' roll to boho looks.
And having a plus-size label at NYFW with plus-size models walking the looks really is a big deal. Last year, just 27 plus-size models walked the runways there. What's more, it won't be the only inclusive brand to show that week: Canadian retailer Addition Elle will debut its collaboration with model Jordyn Woods with a catwalk presentation during NYFW, too, WWD reported.
But there's more: the runway show will also be the semifinal round for Torrid's third annual Model Search competition, which kicked off back in May—which means those finalists will be walking the runway. Pretty sweet start to a modeling career, no? (P.S. The search is still on! You can apply through August 13 here.)
“We appreciate the brand’s commitment to size inclusiveness and body-positive message and believe they are an excellent partner as we continue pushing the boundaries of the fashion industry,” Catherine Bennett, senior vice president and managing director of IMG Fashion, told WWD.
We've seen a lot of strides toward greater size inclusivity in the fashion industry over the past couple of years, as well as figures like Candice Huffine (who's on the Model Search judging panel) and Ashley Graham becoming visible spokespeople for body positivity. Of course, there's still more work to be done, but hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for the industry.
