Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev will miss at least three months after suffering a wrist laceration during Friday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

According to the team, the 25-year-old will remain in a New Jersey hospital for the time being after successful surgery, before heading back to Toronto.

During the third period, Devils forward Jesper Bratt’s skate cut Mikheyev’s wrist in a freak accident that caused the injury.

The unfortunate incident damaged an artery and tendons, per the team’s press release.

With forward Trevor Moore out indefinitely with a concussion and now Mikheyev out long-term, the Leafs will have their offensive depth tested during the second half of their season.

The Russian rookie has surprised most with his first season in North America, scoring eight goals and 23 points through 39 games.
