Tornado Rips Through Dallas Leaving Thousands Without Power

A severe tornado touched down near Dallas Love Field Airport on Sunday, leaving damaged property, fallen trees, downed power lines, and gas leaks in its wake.

The National Weather Service reported that the tornado touched down around 9 p.m and moved northeast. According to The Associated Press, three people are currently being hospitalized for non life-threatening injuries.

Dallas residents are now waiting for power to be restored in many parts of the city.

According to ABC News, more than 167,000 households were reported to be without power across the state of Texas, with 65,000 of those households within the city alone. Six schools within The Dallas Independent School District canceled classes on Monday due to “extensive damage." Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage caused by the tornado and storms.

The city opened a local recreation center at 2 a.m. Monday morning for anyone seeking shelter, according to local NBC affliliate in Dallas.

The storm also effected surrounding states including Missouri and Arkansas — where one person was killed by a falling tree. According to The AP Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee will be hit with thunderstorms.

Commuters have been asked to avoid affected areas when traveling to and from work.
