The Top Trending Lipstick Color in Your State

From ELLE

With lipstick sales seeing steady growth, according to the latest stats, it's apparent that women around the country are feeling drawn toward bold lips-but we also know that the big shade of the moment in Alaska may not be the pick all the way down in Florida. To find out which hues are hitting where, we watched Google's "rising" lipstick search terms-meaning the ones that were showing significant growth-at the beginning of the season in all 50 states. The breakdown: The middle of the country can't seem to get enough classic red, while purple snagged second place overall, winning 10 states. Maroon is top dog along parts of the West Coast, and taupe is making some waves here and there. Pink is hitting a home run around the Great Lakes, and a few surprise spots are keeping it interesting with orange.

From there, we scoured the fall 2016 runways to find out the modern way to go for each shade, then checked in with New York City-based makeup artist Miguel Lledo, who showed us just how wearable these trends can be by showing them off on three skin tones. Click on your state to see a complexion-specific color suggestion for the winner in your area, then read below for all the details that'll keep your lips on trend this season-wherever you live.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Taupe

States: Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The way to wear it now: In a richer shade than "nude." Taupe showed up at the Suno and Carolina Herrera shows looking warmer and more interesting than the usual smear of sheer lip balm, yet neutral enough not to hog all the attention.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: Reach for a soft beige-taupe with a peach or mauve undertone rather than a true gray-taupe. Go any darker or more intense, Lledo says, and it might look more like a true brown on pale skin-and while that hue that's often pretty on fair types, it's not the look that's rising in popularity right now. Try: Maybelline Color Sensational The Creamy Mattes in Daringly Nude, $7, maybelline.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: Since ladies on the darker end of the spectrum tend to have taupe in their natural lip tone, the key here is to add interest by layering two shades: a darker taupe on the outside with a shade a smidge lighter in the middle. "It keeps the lips from looking too flat or blah," says Lledo. Try: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Intense Nude and Insatiable Ivory, $32 each, esteelauder.com.

For skin tones like Aleah's: A bit of cocoa in your taupe is key for ladies in this category. Need a hint on the exact tone to look for? "Follow the darkest portion of your lips and go a touch deeper," says Lledo. Try: Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Carnal, $17, urbandecay.com.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Pink

States: Hawaii, Idaho, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, and West Viriginia.

The way to wear it now: Bright, like the electric pink seen at the Jeremy Scott show. "With the rise of Instagram it's all about fun and pop," says Lledo.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: Go cool and vibrant. "Pale skin can handle cheerful colors," says Lledo. Going for a stick with a soft sheen rather than over-the-top shine to keep it from getting too Barbie-ish. Try: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Infamous, $32, esteelauder.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: Since complexions in this category need a little more oomph in their pinks to make them stand out, Lledo says to consider topping a vivid pink with an ultra-shiny gloss. The look is both high-impact and completely lovely. Try: Revlon Ultra HD Gel Lipcolor in Garden, $9, Walmart stores.

For skin tones like Aleah's: Seemingly shocking pinks can look more muted next to darker skin than they look in the tube, so reach for an extra-bright fuchsia-and make sure to find one with a satin finish to keep it from appearing chalky. Try: MAC Lipstick in Girl About Town, $17, maccosmetics.com.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Orange

States: Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The way to wear it now: In a vivid burst. When orange lips showed up on the catwalk at the Proenza Schouler and Fendi shows, the message was clear: Orange is going bold. And a few states-well, three-heard that loud and clear.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: "If you're fair you want a really bright, true orange shade to give you contrast against your pale skin," says Lledo. It might seem intimidating, but it's actually less tricky that way. "A soft orange is more likely to wash you out," he insists. Try: Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Muse, $28, hourglasscosmetics.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: You want a punch of color but with a sheer tangerine gloss on top. The two layers will give the color the dimension it needs to stand out on medium skin tones. Try: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Daring, $32, esteelauder.com and Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Gloss in Shell Game, $26, esteelauder.com.

For skin tones like Aleah's: Tangerine shades can look gorgeous on dark skin-just go for one with coral hues mixed in to keep it from going traffic-cone-y on you. Try: Catrice Ultimate Stay Lipstick in Looks Like Coral!, $4, ulta.com.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Red

States: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The way to wear it now: With dimension. The reds we saw on the Victoria Beckham, Roksanda, and Joseph catwalks all found ways to add depth to reds in new and fresh ways.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: Pale coloring provides the perfect backdrop for true red lipstick. The way to keep it looking "of the moment": Choose a matte finish, but add a very thin layer of clear lip balm on top-not to give it a sheen, but just enough to make it look un-matte in certain lighting. Try: NYX Velvet Matte Lipstick in Blood Love, $8, nyxcosmetics.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: Try darkening your favorite red with a bit of black cherry lip liner around the edges-it'll give your red the vampy edge that caught a lot of attention on the recent runways. Try: Sephora Collection Lip Liner to Go in Deep Ruby, $6, sephora.com and Too Faced Melted Liquified Longwear Lipstick in Melted Ruby, $21, toofaced.com.

For skin tones like Aleah's: Look for a red with the slightest touch of raspberry. The little unexpected twist on the classic is breathtaking on deeper skin tones. Try: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick in Decisive Poppy, $32, esteelauder.com.

Model 2: Jumpsuit: Fleur du Mal Lounge Overall, $485, fleurdumal.com; earrings: Vita Fede Siren Sfera Earrings, $395, vitafede.com. Model 3: Top: J.A. Anderson c/o Albright NYC; earrings albrightnyc.com: Elizabeth and James Lorette Earrings, $125, zappos.com.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Purple

States: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee.

The way to wear it now: Any way you like. Grape, plum, and aubergine lips showed up on runways in New York, Paris, and Milan.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: Look for a blue base. "With purple, light-skinned ladies get a little scared because it can go severe. But if you go with a blue-toned one, you'll look more alive, more modern." Try: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Matte Sculpting Lip Color in Shameless Violet, $32, esteelauder.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: Look for a bright purple with pink undertones. Lledo says, "It'll brighten your face so you look more awake." Try: Sonia Kashuk Satin Luxe Lip Color in Fig, $10, target.com.

For skin tones like Aleah's: Some purples can read quite bruise-like on deeper-toned lips. The way to head off the color-shift? Look for an eggplant shade. It'll be warm enough not to give you the blues (so to speak). Try: Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Jam, $26, sephora.com.

Trending Lipstick Shade: Maroon

States: California, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, and Vermont.

The way to wear it now: Look for sophisticated red-browns (as seen at the Marni, Bottega Veneta, and Mary Katrantzou shows) that you may not have dared to go for in summer.

For skin tones like Anne Sophie's: Reach for a soft chocolate. Anything too dark may read goth, which isn't quite the goal for the season. "Just go for something with sparkle flecks to add a fresh twist," says Lledo. Try: Ulta Lipstick in Good Year for Wine, $8, ulta.com.

For skin tones like Lara's: The most foolproof way to wear a brown-based red on medium skin is to find one with a smidge of purple in it-think somewhere between maroon and burgundy. It'll create just the right amount of contrast for your complexion. Try: Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Blackberry, $28, bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

For skin tones like Aleah's: Look for deep, warm wine shades. Rich and intense, they're a statement lip in one swipe. Try: Estée Lauder Pure Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick in Desirous, $32, esteelauder.com.
