Top Gun: Maverick continues to dominate the box office as it officially becomes Tom Cruise's first film to surpass $1 billion USD globally — his highest-grossing movie yet.

According to reports, the Top Gun sequel achieved this feat in only 31 days and, in addition to making personal history for Cruise, is the second film during the pandemic to do so. Deadline adds that Maverick is going head-to-head with Elvis for this week's No. 1 in the box office, with each film projected to earn around $30.5 million USD over the weekend.

In mid-June, the Cruise film became the highest-grossing film of 2022 after it crossed $400 million USD at the domestic box office. Maverick overtook Disney and Marvel‘s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the top spot, beating its $399 million USD domestic earnings.
