The Top 5 Prints of Summer 2020 (Beyond Florals)

Erin Fitzpatrick

I won't bore you with a Miranda Priestly quote, but there's so much more to summer prints than florals. I certainly am a proponent of the classic pattern, but I decided to check in on everyone's favorite brands to see which trends they're advocating for this summer. Not to pat myself on the back, but I think I hit the jackpot.

For starters, gingham is having quite a moment in the spotlight right now. Slap it on a bikini, slip dress, shorts, or headband, and it's bound to sell like crazy. Many of my favorite gingham pieces also tap into other trends like puff sleeves and '90s-esque thin straps, so it's really like killing two birds with one stone. The tie-dye trend also shows no sign of slowing down, perhaps driven in part by its popularity on TikTok. Scroll down to see and shop my five favorite summer pattern trends from H&M, Shopbop, Reformation, and more.

1. Gingham

Charlie Holiday Bassk Slip Dress ($109)

I love the crossover strap details on the back of this sweet dress.

Madewell Gingham Bow-Front Tee ($35)

Alright, this is the cutest $35 T-shirt I've ever seen.

Who What Wear Puff Short Sleeve Blouse ($28)

This super-cute top is also available in sizes 1X to 4X. I especially love the ruffle detail on the sleeves.

Who What Wear Midi Circle Skirt ($35)

A-line skirts are forever.

Montce Swim Marcela Bikini Top ($198)

This is technically a bikini top, but I 100% support wearing it as a blouse.

Shashi Heidi Headband ($38)

Kate Middleton, anyone?

Madewell Washed Embroidered Bandana ($13)

A cute bandana is particularly functional with face-covering rules right now.

H&M Button-Front Skirt ($25)

H&M does it again.

Kos Resort Gingham Shorts ($48)

Wear these shorts with a white tank top, and Converse sneakers and call it a day.

2. Fruits

Helmstedt Ruffled Strawberry-Print Shorts ($237)

Helmstedt is one of my favorite rising Danish brands. How could I resist these delightful strawberry shorts?

Uniqlo x Marimekko Short-Sleeve Shirt ($40)

Grapes, pears, tomatoes—the gang's all here.

Stripe & Stare Fruit Bikini 4 Pack ($60)

To liven up your underwear drawer.

Reformation Sidecar Dress ($218)

Reformation always has the best prints, and this precious lemon pattern is no exception.

English Factory Lemon Print Mini Dress ($80)

The only thing better than this adorable print is the fun puff sleeves.

Reformation Sigmund Dress Es ($174)

Square necklines are still very much on-trend.

South Parade Tutti Frutti Tee ($46)

I'll admit: I hoard graphic tees for summer. They're just perfect to wear with jeans or cutoffs.

Agua Bendita Nativa One Piece Swimsuit ($150)

This charming swimsuit is almost too pretty to swim in—but that won't stop me.

3. Tie-Dye

Vintage Havana Burnout Tie Dye Sweatshirt ($48)

Meet the perfect tie-dye sweatshirt for lounging at home.

Vintage Havana Tie Dye Jogger Pants ($42)

Confession: I've been wearing the same two pairs of gray sweats for weeks now. This will be a refreshing change for my stay-at-home wardrobe.

Astr the Label Charisma Tie Back Sleeveless Midi Dress ($118)

Don't miss the pretty back detail on this dress. Bonus points for the very '90s skinny straps.

Elan Cover-Up Maxi Dress ($74)

The drawstring waist on this dress ensures it's comfortable for everyone.

Dolce Vita Lyza Flip Flops ($32)

I don't care what anyone says: Flip-flops are real shoes.

Plush Tie Dye Tank Dress ($154)

Don't overlook the cute ruffle trim on this dress.

Zella Studio Lite Longline Sports Bra ($39)

Who said workout gear has to be boring? This bra has a cool artsy vibe.

& Other Stories Tie Dye Scrunchie ($9)

Love a good hair accessory.

Afrm Zadie Semi Sheer Turtleneck ($38)

This looks way more expensive than it really is. Proenza Schouler, anyone?

Daydreamer Long Sleeve Top ($69)

Take notes: This is perfect to wear with sweatshorts.

4. Polka Dots

Zimmermann Tie-Detailed Polka-Dot Bikini Top ($140)

This super-cute top can easily be worn with solid-color bottoms you already own if you don't want to invest in the matching Tie-Detailed Polka-Dot Bikini Briefs ($115).

Who What Wear Short Sleeve Dress ($40)

This pretty flutter-sleeve dress is getting great reviews on Target's website. It also comes in sizes 1X to 4X

Reformation Wildflower Dress ($174)

Reformation can do no wrong in my book.

H&M Balloon-Sleeved Organza Dress ($70)

Now that's a statement sleeve.

English Factory Polka Dot Cropped Top ($70)

Square neckline? Ruffled sleeves? Peplum detail? Check, check, and check.

Bb Dakota Something About Dots Dress ($120)

This shape is so easy to wear with sneakers, sandals, or heels.

Silvia Tcherassi La Banquera Dot Peplum Top ($620)

This is how you master the mixed-material trend.

5. Tropical

Agua Bendita Susan Bikini Top ($80)

Almost as good as a trip to Hawaii. Almost.

Havaianas x Farm Rio Flowers Sandals Citrus ($26)

Have no shame in your flip-flop game.

Farm Rio Mini Cashew Smocked Top ($140)

This is such a cheerful little top. I particularly like the tiered detailing on the sleeves.

Birds of Paradis Margot Camp Shirt ($218)

Your dad's Hawaiian shirts are cool again—someone go tell him.
