Just as Paris has the George V and London The Ritz, Seville has the Alfonso XIII. It’s vibe is opulent and luxurious. At the time it was built by the eponymous King Alfonso XIII for the 1929 Expo’s VIP guests it was the grandest hotel in Seville, if not in Spain. Much of the original décor remains; picture patterned marble floors, mirrored wooden lifts, crystal chandeliers, and Triana azulejos (tiles) – gleaming metallic in bathrooms, and colourful ceramic on walls. Shaped leather headboards and bold graphic-patterned rugs add a contemporary touch. The outdoor pool is a rare treat in the midst of the city, and the Andalusian patio, with its fountain and gardens, makes a wonderful spot for breakfast. An expert guide to Seville

Mercer Sevilla

The hotel's style marries a traditional Andalusian casa palacio from the late 19th century (deliciously glamorous curved marble staircase, magnificent light-filled patio with glass panelling, grand arches and fountain) with bang-up-to-date European furnishings. No expense has been spared on furniture – recline elegantly on a gold Flexform sofa or relax by the rooftop pool on a Tribu lounger. The service is extremely attentive – you're greeted with a glass of cava and a dainty mini-cake. In the lounge and bar, a warm palette of (Seville) orange and burnished mossy greens creates a sophisticated urban feel. Come here for a Rebujito cocktail: a twist on the classic sherry-and-lemonade drink of the Feria, with fruit-infused manzanilla and a citrus foam. Some hotels ooze class, this grand, former 18th-century palacio feels every inch the Andalusian palace it is. And it's not just period glamour. Moorish arches, ornate tilework, mottled marble pillars and parquet floors embellish the interiors, but there's also contemporary styling throughout. Think Scheherezade’s Palace given a Kelly-Hoppen-style makeover. There are also unexpected flourishes; the basement breakfast room with its whitewashed, arched ceiling feels like something out of a space-age 1960s James Bond film. The spa has a sauna and Turkish bath, and massages can be arranged on request. In summer, the rooftop terrace has a small plunge pool and bar with views over the terracotta rooftops of neighbouring grand houses. This 17th-century palacio in the heart of Seville's old town is a classy affair. Decorated in smooth shades of taupe and cream, dotted with South-East Asian and Moroccan furniture, rugs and artwork; it’s hard to fault this complex of converted casa-palacios. Guests can enjoy the most impressive range of activities, from fan painting and hot air ballooning, to polo classes and sherry tasting. A pretty seating area in the annexe has sofas, an honesty bar, coffee machine and library, while the rooftop bar in the main building has a plunge pool and honesty bar, as well as a little lookout tower with daybed. Each of the 17 rooms is simply but beautifully furnished, but the ultimate is the Penthouse, with large terrace on one side, plunge pool on the other, and a freestanding black marble bath. This restored 17th-century mansion hidden down a tiny alley in Santa Cruz offers service worthy of a five-star establishment. The hotel is built in the typical Sevillano style of rooms around an arcaded patio with a fountain. Unusually, this patio is open-air rather than roofed, and bursting with greenery; terracotta pots of frondy ferns and vibrant geraniums, and ivy hanging from the upper floors with tendrils trailing romantically over the balconies. The hotel is so-named because the poet Ximenez de Enciso is said to have been born here. Live classical guitar is performed on the patio every night and the roof terrace offers wonderful views of Santa Cruz and Seville Cathedral.
