From Town & Country

Broadway has been dark since last March, but on December 21, 2020 a little bit of that missing stage magic was visible virtually.

That’s because Adrienne Warren, the Tony-nominated star of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and Matthew López, the Tony-nominated playwright of The Inheritance joined Town & Country editor in chief Stellene Volandes for a conversation about their unique friendship, their intertwining roads to theatrical acclaim, and how they’re staying creative despite the challenges of the current moment.

Warren and López have a unique bond. The pair met in London, where both Tina and The Inheritance first began performances, and have been close ever since. The two Americans forged their friendship abroad—quite a feat, considering the time requirements of both of their shows—and came back to New York in time to be among the most recognized names of the 2019-20 Broadway season.

And while The Inheritance gave its final performance in March of 2020, and Tina is currently waiting for Broadway stages to reopen, neither López nor Warren is sitting still. He’s at work on a musical adaptation of Some Like It Hotas well as a film version of Leading Men, a novel about Tennessee Williams and his relationship with his longtime partner Frank Merlo; she’s about to film the limited series Women of the Movement, playing Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till.

Here is a video of the conversation, which follows our guests from the jitters of their first rehearsals through to their recent Tony Award nominations, and proves that just because we’re not back in theater seats yet doesn’t mean there aren’t great things getting ready to happen.
