‘Tonight was a special night,’ said Jaylen Brown of Celtics’ win on Bill Russell tribute

Before the Boston Celtics won their first game of the 2022-23 season on their own court, star wing Jaylen Brown took some time to speak about the man being honored at the Celtics’ season opener, Hall of Fame Celtics and US Civil Rights legend Bill Russell.

After the 126-117 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, Brown was asked how much time he’d put into the speech, which impressed. “To be honest, no,” he explained, surprisingly given the resounding reception of the Georgia native’s pregame words. “How do you figure out a group of words that encapsulate what Bill Russell’s legacy meant to me, to the city, and to so many others? It was tough to find the words”

“Tonight was a special night,” he added. “It was amazing to be able to play in his honor.”

“Bill Russell was a legend. He was much taller than he was in person just because of what he stood for, what he represented, so may he rest in peace.”
