Toni Collette's Preferences for Filming Love Scenes Are Not What You'd Expect

The actress discussed why she doesn't think intimacy coordinators help her performance.

Toni Collette isn't a fan of using intimacy coordinators.

These days, most TV and film productions require an intimacy coordinator—someone who choreographs and facilitates intimate scenes between actors—to be on set. Their purpose is to make sure boundaries are being respected and there's consent within each physical action of romantic or sexual nature.

However, Collette told The Sunday Times that she's often turned down using an intimacy coordinator.

"I think it's only been a couple of times where they’ve been brought in, and I have very much trusted and felt at ease with the people I was working with," she explained.

The actress continued, "It just felt like those people who were brought in to make me feel more at ease were actually making me feel more anxious. They weren't helping, so I asked them to leave."

When asked if she would have felt more comfortable using one when she was younger and more vulnerable in her career, Collette said it "depends."

"Look, every job is different," she added. "Every single job is different. Because it's a bunch of new people it's a new energy; everyone brings their whole life with them, and it's all thrown in the pot. You never know what you’re going to get and it's a miracle that a film ever comes together, let alone thrives."

She then mentioned that she's been fortunate enough to only have had to work with a "few assholes" in her career. Collette refused to name who she didn't enjoy working with, though.

Collette will star in The Power, a dystopian thriller based on Naomi Alderman's novel of the same name, which premieres on Amazon Prime on March 31.
