Tom Steyer, the Connor Roy of the 2020 Democratic primary, finally got a chance to hit the debate stage Tuesday night. And maybe because he knew he wasn't likely to get a lot of time on the mic, he decided to attempt a style statement.

Not since we were first introduced to the president of neckwear resistance, Andrew Yang, has Dem Debate style been worth discussing. But Steyer's plaid tie gives us yet another reason to overanalyze why presidential candidates dress the way they do.

In short: right tie, wrong time. It's actually pretty refreshing to see a budding politician break out of the "gold, red, or one of these two shades of blue" mentality. I don't hate the tie! But Tom, you're comin' in hot my man. Hardly anyone watching knows a thing about ya. Don't immediately become "The Tie Guy." Easing in, this is not.

In Steyer's defense, it's not the wrong time of year to wear a plaid wool tie. But a seasonal tie like this demands a seasonal look, and the debate stage isn't a great place to debut that either. I assume that scene in Ides of March where they pore over tie color is rooted in reality. Who in the Steyer camp is pushing for plaid?

Despite the wrong-place-wrong time of Steyer's call here, I wouldn't dissuade you from getting one for yourself should you dig it. Pair it with a gray suit or a tweed jacket and jeans—and then don't do it again for a while. This isn't the best move for your everyday adventures.

Plaid responsibly, and if you decide to run for president, it might be time to retire it for a while. Lord knows what happened to Barry O went he drifted into the wrong lane that one time.
