Tom Holland Tried to Play a Young James Bond

Tom Holland is the current star of the Spider-Man franchise, and will soon play Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie adaptation. You’d think he’d be able to pick any major role he wanted to play at this point. Well, not so fast. In an interview with Total Film (via Variety), Holland revealed that he recently pitched a James Bond origin story film to Sony and Eon Productions. And they soundly rejected the idea and turned him down.

According to Holland, his idea sounded a bit like Young Sherlock Holmes. “It was the origin story of James Bond. Which didn’t really make sense. It didn’t work. It was the dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate [was] particularly interested.”

According to the original report, it would have showcased Bond as “a young man just starting out in the world of high-stakes espionage.”

We’re just guessing, but perhaps the reason that they didn’t go for it is that Casino Royale in 2006 was a James Bond origin story already. Maybe they simply didn’t want to repeat that so soon. Holland’s ideas for a young 007 origin story eventually rolled over into Uncharted becoming a young Nathan Drake origin story. So, perhaps something good came out of this idea after all.

But before anyone dismisses Tom Holland’s “Young 007” idea totally out of hand though, remember that there was a successful animated series in the ’90s called James Bond Jr. That focused on a teenage spy. It spawned spinoff video games and comics and ran for 65 episodes. Okay, so it wasn’t about the actual James Bond. The titular hero was 007’s nephew, not his son, which kinda doesn’t make sense. But it proves that Eon, the James Bond rights holders, are not above a teenage Bond franchise of some kind. So it might not be Tom Holland, but someone could play a young Bond in live-action someday.
