Tom Ellis is currently isolating with his family amid the coronavirus pandemic. While the world is temporarily shut down and waiting to see when normal life will resume, the actor has found ways to pass the time and take care of his health from the comfort of his home.
The star of Netflix's Lucifer recently chatted with Men’s Health about how he's doing while self-isolating and gave some insight into exactly how he’s taking care of himself. The first (and possibly most important) thing to know? Ellis is still finding ways to keep up with his workout—but with some modifications, as he can’t perform the normal chest presses he did at the gym.
“In lockdown, I’ve been doing a lot of pushups and pushup variations and getting to grips with my chins,” he says. “That’s my new target—being good at chins this year. I’m going to come out of quarantine with a big chin.”
Ellis might be adamant about his physical health, but the concept of meditation is another thing entirely. After having therapists suggest that he should try it, the actor ultimately decided to forgo the traditional way, instead finding a calming sport to help center himself.
“I don’t meditate, but I do play golf,” he says. “It’s the only place when I don’t think about anything else that’s going on in my life. And I turn my phone off, which is not the most proper decision at home.”
Amid the workouts, golf and the occasional shut eye (“I’ve got five cats, so I cat nap”), Ellis also chatted about who he likes to call when he’s feeling down and needs an emotional boost. Two important women come to his mind: “My youngest daughter, Marnie, always makes me laugh,” he says. “She’s quite possibly one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.” The actor said he also loves to call his older sister, who knows him best and helps calm him and get a sense of perspective on things.
As for the one person that Ellis would love to spend some self-care time with? “I think it would have to be Julie Andrews,” he says, “because in Mary Poppins, she came in, brought that family back together and lifted their spirits.”
And for those wondering whether Ellis is doing anything fun while stuck at home: He loves playing Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones when he enters his home, finds himself binge watching Normal People and Dead to Me, and he loves a good spaghetti bolognese with grated parmesan and a glass of red wine.
