Talk about sympathy for the devil: Tom Ellis, star of supernatural drama Lucifer, says he has been absolutely bowled over by the positive reaction to the show. Speaking at a recent convention in Los Angeles, the actor spoke about the Lucifer fandom, and how he has been getting emotional while shooting the fifth and final season.

"These days there is so much TV, so much content out there. To be on a show that gets noticed, that people know about, that just seems like a massive achievement these days," he said. "You guys don’t know about all of this but we’ve been up against it quite a lot. We’re like the bastard child."

He then went on to say that the show's cancelation by FOX after season three was almost a blessing: fan uproar over the decision led to the drama being picked up by Netflix for a fourth and fifth season.

"We wouldn’t have known how popular the show was until we got canceled," he said. "That was the crazy thing about it. We didn’t know that there was all that love out there." Lucifer show-runner Joe Henderson has also said that fan support for the show has been "amazing" and "everything you could ask for," and was instrumental in getting the show renewed for a fifth season.

The reprieve of Lucifer on Netflix coincided with Ellis getting into the best shape of his life: he had made a bet with trainer Paolo Mascitti that if the show were renewed, he would commit himself to an intense new fitness program. As a result, the fourth season saw Lucifer looking ripped as hell.

While the next season of Lucifer will be the last time audiences see Ellis in the devilish role, it's safe to say wherever he goes next in his career, he'll be taking a whole new group of fans with him. "I can categorically say that I will never have another experience like this," he said. "When they call cut on the last day, it’s going to be a lot to take in."
