Tom Cruise Is Back in the Top Gun: Maverick Trailer

Finally the sequel that some people asked for is here.

You'd be forgiven if you told us you'd forgotten that Top Gun 2 was happening at all—it's been a while since we heard a shred of news about the thing—much less that it would be released next year starring A-lister cast of Tom Cruise, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Ed Harris, but here we are. Top Gun: Maverick is imminent, and by the look of this teaser trailer, it has everything fans of the original, classic film want in a sequel.

What does the modern Top Gun fan want? More of the same, it appears, with even more impressive and expensive visuals that filmmakers in 2019 have available at their disposal. Taking the reins from the original's director, the late Tony Scott, is Joseph Kosinski, best known for Tron Legacy and 2017's Only The Brave. Kosinski doesn't reveal much about Maverick's plot, per se. I have no idea who Hamm or Teller are playing, for example, but for those who came to the trailer hoping to see fast planes, aviator sunglasses, and sweaty games of beach volleyball, your lucky day is here.

Top Gun: Maverick will be released sometime in 2020, a year ahead of Cruise's seventh Mission: Impossible film. Tom, since you're all about the sequels these days, may I humbly suggest that Edge of Tomorrow follow-up we're all waiting for?
