Today, I’m Buying More Wine Glasses

My 20s can be divided into three periods: First, there was the Bodega Glass era. I was obsessed with these unassuming little glasses (see here). We did everything together—including cocktail hour and dinner parties. I insisted that they were the perfect vessel for wine and that I did not need an actual official wine glass of any sort. I was young! I thought the decision to own only this set of glasses was both utilitarian and vaguely European.

Then, two years ago, I hosted Thanksgiving at my apartment for the first time. Something washed over me. It’s time to own my own stemmed wine glasses, I thought. (Yes, I had been—boo—Learning About Wine, Specifically Natural Wine.) I bought four of these modern-silhouetted glasses, and I really can't emphasize enough how cool I felt. Serving wine to my mom at Thanksgiving in a real glass? What a high. Drinking a solo glass with a book on my fire escape? Terribly adult. Pouring a chilled red and handing it to a friend while she snagged crudités from my cutting board? Oh, boy.

Less than one year later, all of the wine glasses were no more.

I’d love to blame my rowdy friends for breaking them. But I’m pretty sure it was all me—I recently spilled the inaugural glass of red wine on a friend’s white rug, so really I’m the rowdy friend. This began the third period, a phase of harsh self-reflection. Perhaps it was not, as I had previously thought, time to own stemmed wine glasses. I went back to the Bodega glass life.

But, you know what? Today is Amazon Prime Day, and there’s a deal on wine glasses—and I’m going to buy some. They’re really nice wine glasses, from a brand you’ve likely heard of. They performed well in our product test. The world is maybe not in a totally great place. My post-work glass of wine is very important to me. I have no idea what I’m doing with my life. These wine glasses are going to make me pathetically happy. Yes, the wine glasses, like the happiness they’ll bring, are fragile. But I’ll be careful. And, if I break one, I’ll just Roomba up the pieces and start again.
