Timothée Chalamet Shaded Scarlett Johansson on The Tonight Show
Timothée Chalamet would do anything to work with Greta Gerwig again — including, it seems, joking about Scarlett Johansson.
While praising the film, its actors, and director Greta Gerwig (who he worked with on Lady Bird) on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Timothée took a moment to plead to Greta about future work together. "Greta, if you're watching this, you want me to play a chair or a tree, like Scarlett Johansson, I'll be a tree," he said, which caused Jimmy to then volunteer to play the chair while Timothée stood up and pretended to be the tree.
The comment says a lot about how well Greta and Timothée work together, but it also pokes a bit of fun at Scarlett and her controversial comments from earlier this year. Back in June, ScarJo defended herself against backlash she had received in the past for taking on the role of a trans man in Rub and Tug (she eventually dropped out of the film) and prior to that, in the movie Ghost in the Shell, where she was called out for whitewashing an originally Japanese character.
"Acting goes through trends," she told As If at the time. "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job. There are a lot of social lines being drawn now, and a lot of political correctness is being reflected in art."
Her "tree" quote was immediately turned into an internet joke, and it seems like Timothée fans enjoyed the shady reference on The Tonight Show. "Timothée chalamet calling out scarlett johansson saying he would play a TREE. this is my favorite video in the entire universe. goodbye," one Twitter user wrote. Another shared two photos of trees with the caption, "Can someone tell me which one is timothée chalamet and which one is scarlett johansson."
But trees weren't the only topic of discussion during the segment. Remember if you will, the infamous Kid Cudi birthday dinner that went down in March 2019. As Pete Davidson had recalled of the evening, a bunch of famous friends, including Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and even Timothée all showed up at one point, and at the end of the night, Pete was reportedly left with a rather large bill. But, the saga apparently continues, as Timothée just shared another new chapter in this gripping tale of a night out.
The Little Women star detailed his own experience at the table, describing the continued arrival of A-listers as an "earthquake in the restaurant." He told the late-night host that he had no idea who else was expected to attend, and had only gone to dinner after Kid Cudi invited him that morning. Despite Timothée's Hollywood status, he found himself feeling out of place as the evening wore on, and the celebrities continued to arrive. Thus, he did the most normal thing — hide in the bathroom.
He told Jimmy that he sent a text to his friends, asking if he was worthy of the evening among A-listers. “They were like, ‘Man, 16-year-old you would slap the sh*t out of you. You go back to the table,'" he said. And the rest was apparently history.
Timothée also shared another secret with Jimmy: if acting hadn't worked out, he probably would have been a dancer. "My mom is a dance teacher, so maybe something in the arts," he said. Our fingers are officially crossed for Timothée's future in a musical — and if he has to play a tree, so be it.
