Timothée Chalamet Is Perfectly Attired for Social Distancing

Timothee Chalamet is both a fashion icon for our age—defying all stereotypes, soaring above cliches like a freaking fashion eagle—and a soothsayer for the moment, with just the right outfit to knock us slightly off our rockers. Like, remember when he went suiting casual, but brooch formal, to the Oscars? Or when he wore Sterling Ruby’s paint-spattered S.R. Studio LA. CA overalls to promote a movie? These are the kinds of outfits that move people young and old to tears. I am personally taping pics of these fits to my windows—images facing out, to keep my neighbors inspired in these trying times.

So in this time of isolation, of staying at home, of course Chalamet has emerged once more as the directional dresser of the moment. On Monday, he strolled through Notting Hill in a perfect Social Isolation Constitutional Fit. Notting Hill is the London neighborhood where Julia Roberts once gave Hugh Grant a giant Marc Chagall painting while wearing a Prada-inspired sweater set and flip-flops in a film of the same name, so you know it’s a place where history is made.

And as he ambled along alone, we took in with admiration the way he assembled a baseline for all Social Isolation Constitutional Fits—SICFs, if you will—moving forward. He’s got his own personal safety blanket: the Prada nylon hooded jacket he’s been wearing around New York for the past several weeks. He’s got front-crease pants on with a loose, “I do what I WANT!” silhouette. And he’s got two of the most “I’m the boss” accessories on the planet: New Balance sneakers, and a hat with a crest on it. This one is from Chelsea, the soccer team, but it still conveys utter authority, that certain je ne sais six feet away from moi attitude that this moment demands. To this delicious sundae of an outfit, he added a maraschino cherry: headphones, which are likely piping out a special playlist filled with songs not simply about being alone, but how you can follow the rules and still break a few, my fraaaynd. He’s a-thinkin’ and a-wond’rin’ all the way down the road! (In other words maybe he’s listening to BOB DYLAN!!!) In these troubled times, that’s just the sort of fit and audio guidance we need.
