Timothée Chalamet knows what you're thinking. You can see it in his eyes on the 2020 National Board of Review Gala red carpet. He can feel you looking at it. No, not at his absolutely undeniable fit—a Stella McCartney off-white tuxedo paired with a graphic tee and a paper clip chain. Rather, Timmy knows all eyes are on the 16 to 24 hairs occupying his upper lip. Our boy is growing himself a mustache, and nobody seems to be sure about it except our boy, himself.

Soon after his appearance, the fan-favorite's facial hair was quickly trending on Twitter, and not for good reason. Comparisons abound, the general sentiment regarding Chalamet's choice was "bad." Fully formed it is not, but it's hard to say exactly why The People are so offended. Perhaps it's just too soon to consider our favorite 24-year-old is, in fact, a grown-ass man.

More, from our friends at ELLE:

But this?? I don't know about those little hairs. Will men stop at nothing to make themselves unattractive?

Never, I hope. Without these sort of attempts, we would never have been blessed with the Summer of Sleaze and its grand lesson—that sometimes giving zero fucks is even three fucks too many to give. That said, dear reader, attempting this yourself I do not advise.

I am sure the notion that celebrities being 'just like us' has been well imprinted on your brain, given that so many seem to also grocery shop, pay at parking meters, and eat at Chipotle. But there are some arenas where this just doesn't hold up. Rocking a little wispy boy on your face is one of those arenas.

Timothée Chalamet is uniquely positioned to make this work. He is a comprehensively cool, and even more confident young man. He's also at the height of heights in terms of public image right now. It's the ideal time for him to wind up his middle finger by way of sporting the kind of mustache your grandpa would say a cat could lick off.

I have no choice but to give him credit for his attempt, and if you thought I didn't notice the small population occupying his chin, you'd be mistaken. This isn't Timothée Chalamet growing a mustache, this is Timothée Chalamet letting All the Facial Hair He Has grow in. He's testing the waters, as every college boyfriend has done at least once before. And I am not hesitant to say he's making it work, because he's earned the right to try.

And so I say wisp on, young Tim. Only you can do this.
