The Timberland x SpongeBob Collab Is…Actually Kinda Perfect
The number of SpongeBob collaborations in 2019 has been...well, there have been a lot of them. SpongeBob on the Super Bowl? Handled. SpongeBob Kyrie 3s and 5s? Why not? You only celebrate your 20th anniversary once! But the combination of SpongeBob and Timberland? Seems strange, but it just plain works. The limited-edition SpongeBob SquarePants x Timberland 6-inch boots are good and fun and, ironically enough, still waterproof.
Timberland officially launched the collaboration this past Friday, and while the collection is full of both apparel and footwear, the variations on the classic 6-inch boot are where you should be looking. Listed for $220 each, the set of limited-edition boots comes in two colorways with very different vibes. A black one is, as it turns out, pretty subtle. But the blue one is as loud as the anthropomorphic sponge himself.
The real secret to the collaboration, though, is in the details. On the heel, the classic Timberland logo has been transformed into a Krabby Patty—and that is what you call art.
The boot itself is the level of quality you'd expect from Timberland, with premium leather detailing and a waterproof exterior. And if you want to change it up, each pair comes with a second set of laces that can decidedly turn the volume up (yellow and pink anyone?) or down.
If that doesn’t quite sound like your speed, the collaboration also has apparel like tees, a sweatshirt, and a jacket, plus kids sizes of the boots. But here’s the thing: If you grew up even tangentially close to the era of SpongeBob, then you know you have to carve out a little space for fun. And it’s hard to imagine boots that will ever give as bold of a nod to Mr. Squarepants as this duo. So, are you ready kids?
