A TikToker claims her Airbnb in Bali was actually an ‘abandoned’ building: ‘I think you got scammed’

A woman traveling on the Indonesian island of Bali claims she discovered something very strange after arriving at her Airbnb.

Bree Robertson is a full-time traveler who runs Atypical Adventure, a travel blog and social media channel with tens of thousands of followers. On TikTok, Robertson (@atypical_adventure) often posts about the life of travel she’s experienced since quitting her nine-to-five job.

But a recent video showed something a bit less exciting. In the clip, posted in mid-July, Robertson claimed she arrived at her Airbnb in Bali only to find an “abandoned” house.

The clip shows what Robertson said was the home she booked through Airbnb. But the building seems empty and unprepared for guests.

Robertson proceeded to point out overgrowth in the yard and smashed windows on the rental house.

“Thanks, @airbnb,” Robertson captioned her post.

Speaking to Insider, Robertson said she booked the Airbnb after seeing a plethora of good reviews. The property allegedly featured an infinity pool and an on-site restaurant. However, the restaurant was allegedly closed when she arrived.

“The place was $80 and had some great reviews,” Robertson wrote in a TikTok comment. “Air BnB also said the host had a response time of an hour so I assumed it was still open.”

Robertson told Insider she originally thought the mishap was funny but soon realized she didn’t have a place to stay for the night. Thankfully, she and her partner found another listing nearby. Robertson added that she got a refund from Airbnb almost immediately.

Still, commenters were clearly angered by her experience.

“I think you got scammed,” one user wrote.

“Such a shame,” another added. “It looks like a wonderful place if still running.”

“Probably hasn’t been anyone there since before the pandemic,” another user speculated.

Airbnb closures have been an issue in recent years, with COVID-19 affecting the rental market significantly in some areas. For example, a 2021 study by LendingTree found that some major cities had seen over 40% of Airbnbs shut down in the pandemic’s first year.
