Tiger Woods woke up feeling good, so he'll give the BMW Championship a go
Tiger Woods woke up Tuesday and decided play the BMW Championship after withdrawing from last week’s The Northern Trust.
The championships are the second of three FedExCup Playoff events and begin Thursday at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
Tiger Woods: ‘I feel good’
Woods appeared at the club Tuesday afternoon and told reporters it wasn’t until that morning he decided he would compete. Via Golfweek:
“I feel good. Feel a lot better than I felt last week. Felt good this morning, so I thought I’d give it a go.”
Woods planned to get treatment on Tuesday and wasn’t anticipating taking a practice round, according to ESPN. He would instead try and work on his short game if there was a chance, per ESPN.
Woods has a 7:50 a.m. ET tee time Wednesday for the Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am. He’ll tee off Thursday at 12:54 p.m. ET with C.T. Pan and Billy Horschel in the first round.
Woods dealing with mild oblique strain
Woods withdrew from last week’s tournament due to a mild oblique strain that caused pain and stiffness. He struggled through a plus-4 in the first round, 13 strokes behind the leader.
It was the first time he withdrew from a tournament since having spinal fusion surgery in April 2017.
Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent, said last week he was “being smart.” Via ESPN:
"I've said in the past, years ago, he just would have continued to play through all of this. If he had the same mentality he had years and years ago, he wouldn't be playing golf at all right now. He said it again the other day, this is the new normal. He's had multiple surgeries all over his body. These things now are not debilitating enough to keep him out for months at a time, but just enough that he can't compete at the level he needs to compete at. He shouldn't put himself in a position where he could put himself out for a long period of time. If you feel you should not go, you should not go."
Woods avoids playing back-to-back tournaments but announced last month he would make a run at The Tour Championships title, which he won last year. It was his first victory since 2013.
He’s currently 38th in the FedEx Cup standings and will need a good showing to advance to the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The top 30 in the cup standings after the BMW Championship advance to The Tour Championship.
