Watch: Tiger Woods nearly has hole-in-one at the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Fun fact: Tiger Woods hasn’t had a hole-in-one in a competitive golf tournament in 20 years.

Tiger, who recorded his first hole-in-one at age 6, had an ace in his very first tournament as a pro, the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open, another at the 1997 Phoenix Open and a third at the 1998 Sprint International.

Since that one in ’98, nada.

He nearly broke the streak in Sunday’s final round of the Masters on the par-3, 240-yard fourth at Augusta National.

He’d make the birdie putt to move him to 3-over for the tournament, a small consolation in his return to major championship golf after a three-year hiatus recovering from multiple back surgeries. He entered the final round 18 strokes back of leader Patrick Reed, making Sunday’s round nothing more than an obligation. Not exactly the return he’d hoped for when, just a few days earlier, he’d been pegged as one of the favorites coming in.

Two holes later he had a straight 5-foot putt for birdie. He wound up three-putting for bogey, which pretty much sums up his tournament: one step forward, two steps back.

His next shot at a major comes in June’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
