Tiffany Haddish's Prabal Gurung Dress for the 2018 Emmy Awards Has a Very Personal Meaning

Tiffany Haddish never misses an opportunity to make a statement with her red-carpet fashion (#tbt to the time she wore the same $4,000 Alexander McQueen dress to three different events, and her look at the 2018 Emmys is no exception.

The actress/comedian walked the red carpet in a multicolored gown by designer Prabal Gurung that she says was inspired by the Eritrean flag, where her late father was from. "It's custom actually," she said of the floor-length, rainbow-striped gown. "I asked them to make a dress that represents my father's land."

This isn't the first time Haddish has drawn outfit inspiration from her father's home country. At the 2018 Oscars, she wore a traditional Eritrean gown as a way of honoring him after he passed away. "My father is from Eritrea, and he passed away last year," she said on the red carpet that night. "He said one day I would end up here, and if I ever end up at the Oscars, to honor my people. So I'm honoring my fellow Eritreans."

While on the Emmys red carpet, Haddish also discussed why she decided to become an actor and comedian. "I realized that I like to do a lot of different things," she said. "And I could just do one thing, acting, and then I could get paid for all of those different things because like I love beef jerky, I love dancing, I love horses, like I wanted to be ... a rancher you know... I figured I could get that part in a movie and do it that way."

This is Haddish's first time attending the Emmys, where she's nominated for the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn on SNL, and if she wins, that trophy's not going on some shelf. Instead, she said she's "putting it in the bed next to me so I feel like somebody's sleeping with me," Haddish joked. "I'm busy I don't sleep with nobody." Oh, Tiffany.
