'Thor: Love and Thunder' Will Show How Thor and Jane Foster Broke Up

Thor: Love and Thunder is the summer superhero movie of our dreams. After fans spent months damn near begging for a shred of news from the film, we finally have not one, but two trailers—plus, some epic teases from director Taika Waititi.

First, though, we have some relationship drama to parse through. As you may know by now, the new Thor romp will see the debut of Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor. You might find the resurfacing of Portman's scientist, Jane Foster, a little odd, since we never learned exactly how she broke up with Thor. According to Portman and Chris Hemsworth, the movie is going to mine their relationship blunders for comedy. In an interview with D23 Magazine, Hemsworth said that Thor: Love and Thunder will answer, "What did their relationship look like when they were together? What did it look like when they were breaking up? Why did they break up?' It's some of the funniest stuff in the film." Portman added, "It was really fun to get to imagine the parts of their relationship we hadn't seen."

If that doesn't get you hyped enough, take a look at the newest trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, which revealed Christian Bale's much-hyped villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Bale's foe looks appropriately creepy, seeming like he fell out of the back half of a George Miller flick. Gorr tells our friend Thor that he's slayed some gods before, but guess what? Thor's different. Who would've guessed? Really, we're most excited for the new glimpses of Portman in the preview, already seeming like more of a vet in the superhero game than her ex. Our favorite bundle of rocks, Korg, shows up for a couple gags, too. Oh, and there's more "Sweet Child o' Mine." You can view the trailer above.

The first look at Bale's villain follows Waititi's rather bold claim in Entertainment Weekly's report on Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi called Gorr "very formidable," saying "I think personally, he's probably one of the best villains that Marvel's had in their films. He's very layered." Aside from foes like Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger and Tony Leung's Wenwu there isn't too much competition, but we know Waititi wouldn't throw down the gauntlet if he didn't believe it.

Let's rewind a bit and get to Thor: Love and Thunder's first trailer before we wrap this up. The preview starts with, yes, the slow, karaoke-night-level needle drop of Guns N' Roses's iconic cut followed by a montage-y update on what one mister Thor Odinson has been up to since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga. It looks like he's putting his life back together. The man (or, uh, god) is getting in shape, starting a new relationship, retiring from the superhero biz, and figuring out what this life is all about. Of course, we can only assume that the film's villain, the unseen Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale), will bring our friend back into the mix.

Aside from Thor's impending glow-up, we glimpse the Guardians of the Galaxy, which we more or less expected after the Asgardian flew away with Star-Lord and co. at the end of Avengers: Endgame. We catch a few glimpses of New Asgard, too, which looks like our home base for Thor: Love and Thunder, and certainly has come a long way since its founding in Endgame. There's a fleeting look of Russell Crowe as Zeus, whom we'd like to see more of, please and thank you. Finally, the trailer ends with the debut of Natalie Portman as the Mighty Thor, her superhero moment looking every bit as incredible as we expected.
