This New MAC Product Changed Everything I Thought About Mascara

“The thicker the brush the better” has always been my mascara motto. I first fell in love with the delightfully chubby Diorshow in high school, drained my bank account on tube after too-expensive-for-me tube, and set out in a never-ending search for a cheaper option (Maybelline Mega Plush has been my best find, FYI). Even now, as a beauty editor, I still get a little heart flutter over long, thick bristles.

So when I opened up MAC’s new Pro Beyond Twisted Lash ($22), I was … not terribly excited. Yes, the wand bends like a firm Slinky, and that’s all well and good for people whose arms tire easily from holding a brush at the right angle. But I was put off by the slender, slightly sparse brush. It looked like a pipe cleaner that has just been given a haircut, and it didn’t hold much formula.

I was so skeptical that before I gave it a try this morning, I grabbed another mascara as a backup, just in case I needed to reroute. But then I brushed on one coat and saw my lashes darken. Another, and saw them extend outward and upward. One more, and they grew darker and longer. I brushed on another coat for good measure, and just because I felt like I could. (I never do a fourth coat — it’s usually too clumpy by that point.) And just like that, I found myself on team skinny brush.

My lashes look feathery and even, each coated in a matte black that just enhances the color that’s already there. The lashes themselves aren’t thick, but when separated and darkened, they look more plentiful than normal, like an army of gently curled hairs. And finally — finally! — I could use the brush on my lower lashes without getting it on my under-eyes as well. It’s an everyday mascara and a special-occasion mascara, rolled into one.

What did I learn here? Not to slim-shame brushes — and not to judge a mascara by its size. Try it for yourself on April 21, when the mascara launches online, or April 28, when it launches in stores. Happy swiping!
