Finding a date for prom can be difficult for many high school students. One 17-year-old student who couldn’t find a date decided to take matters into her own hands — by asking herself.

Since Lily Bilgrey’s small school, Scicore Academy, doesn’t have a prom, she was hoping someone from her old school, Freehold Township High School, would ask her to the dance. Still without an invite after ticket sales for that school’s junior prom closed, the 17-year-old decided she didn’t want to miss out on the chance to at least have her very own promposal.

“I was really hoping for someone from Freehold Township to take me to their prom, but time was ticking,” she tells Yahoo Style. “I said to myself “If no one is going to ask me to a prom, I’ll just ask myself!” It was something that I found very funny, but at the same time, I realized I wanted to have the experience that other kids have like the promposal — the flowers, the pictures, the whole experience — and if no one was going to ask me to their prom – I would never be able to attend one.”

She posted a hilarious photo series on her Instagram featuring her comical ask. In the first photo she held up a poster that read, “You can’t spell memes without me PROM?”

While in the second, she posted a candid shot of herself looking surprised by the promposal.

In the last image, she photoshopped two images of herself posing with the poster together, adding the caption, “since none y’all willin to take one for the team,” to the post.

“I am known among my friends to be fairly well versed in memes. It just seemed to be the most fitting way for me to ask myself,” she said on her choice to involve memes in the promposal.

Bilgrey feels that just because she wasn’t asked, doesn’t mean she shouldn’t get to experience the high school moment.

“I think there’s a huge amount of pressure on girls to get asked in the perfect way — and many feel that if they don’t get asked, there isn’t even a point in going,” she says. “It was my way of making a statement, but at the same time, showing I didn’t have a date and letting people know I was ready to go to prom!”

While most of her followers loved her idea, some had different takes. “Most of my friends were saying things like “you go girl” or “this is so funny!” But a few people privately texted me saying they thought it was dumb or sad that I asked myself. To them, I said ‘I find it funny, but if you disagree feel free to unfollow me:)’,” she shared.

Bilgrey’s advice for students that can’t find a date to the dance? “If you don’t have a date, don’t sweat it!” she shared. “If I went to a school with a prom, regardless of having a date, you can bet you’d find me in the center of the dance floor with my girl friends! If you want to go, be confident and others are sure to see how amazing you are! When we look back at high school years, no one is going to remember who asked who or who had the most elaborate promposal, we’re going to remember prom as a milestone in teen life,” she said.

Bilgrey is still hoping a high school student will take her to prom and shared with us that she would be ‘forever grateful’ to be asked.
