Day 1 of New York Fashion Week kicked off with a massive, snowpocalyptic storm over New York City — but that did not deter fashionistas from attending the shows. While we sat bundled up in our oversized puffer coats, beanies, and snowproof rubber boots, the catwalk showed us a different shoe choice for fall/winter 2017: socks with sandals.

It’s traditionally considered a fashion “don’t,” but designers like Prada have reclaimed the look off and on for years. And now the trend you thought had gone is back in action.

This trend was first spotted at the Cinq à Sept show, held at the posh Le Coucou restaurant in SoHo. A model walked down the runway wearing a pair of hunter green wool socks paired with black open-toe heels with ribbon tied around the ankle. The look was also paired with fishnet stockings.

The shoe trend then made an appearance during Adam Selman’s Fall/Winter 2017 show, where models walked down the runway in a myriad of floral, ’60s-inspired looks like a denim trench coat paired with cuffed jeans, a large black leather belt, a floral-accented veil and black platform heels styled with crimson socks.

Finally, at the end of the day during the R13 show, models walked down the runway wearing floral printed combat boots and what else? Knit socks with platform sandals. The look helped complement the grungy, ’90s vibe of the show featuring flared trousers, floral slip dresses and utilitarian-style jackets.

Maybe it’s time to pull out your favorite pair of heels that you stowed away for the winter and consider wearing them again with a colorful knit sock to try this designer-approved, retro shoe trend this season.
