If there’s one thing a thief enjoys — other than the five-finger discount — it’s apparently irony.

According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, police Chief Andrew Smith of Green Bay, Wis., was hoping to deter shoplifters this holiday season by erecting life-size cutouts of himself warning against — you guessed it — shoplifting.

One of the cutouts, in which the chief looked particularly stern, read, “Win a free ride in a police car by shoplifting from this store.”

A stealthy thief made off with one of the cardboard cutouts that was stationed at a store known as Kwik Trip. So far, the suspect remains at large.

Lt. Tom Buchmann told the news outlet, “No demands have been received from the kidnappers at this point,” but one could only imagine what the cutout is facing.

Chief Smith has his own ideas as to where his doppelgänger has ended up. “I figure the cutout is posted at a shooting range somewhere, or perhaps lining a birdcage in someone’s house,” he said.

According to police, the suspect may be driving a silver Chrysler 300, and a very paper-thin Chief Smith may be in the passenger seat.

Regardless of where the cutout of the police chief ends up, Smith reports that retail theft is “down 5 percent this year, so maybe I get the last laugh.
