These Givenchy Men’s Shirts Are on Fire, Literally

Being “on fire” is typically considered a compliment — that is, unless you’re talking about a forest… or an item of clothing. Unfortunately, merchandise with the potential for going up in smoke seems to be showing up in the fashion industry a bit too frequently these days.

On Wednesday, news broke that two scarves from future First Daughter contender Ivanka Trump’s clothing collection were being recalled because they were extremely flammable. After determining that the gauzy scarves didn’t meet the federal flammability standards for textiles, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) ordered that all 20,000 units that had been produced — both those sold and those still on the sales floor — needed to be turned in.

Now, Givenchy’s dealing with a similar situation, albeit one that involves fewer products, unit-wise. The Fashion Law reports that three key pieces from the French luxury brand’s spring 2016 menswear collection are being recalled by CPSC because they “fail to meet the federal flammability standard for wearing apparel and pose a risk of burn injury to consumers.”

All three items are sheer silk tunics (one featuring a graphic of Jesus Christ), which went for $685 to $1,350 at retailers such as Barneys New York, Givenchy Boutiques, Maxfield, Neiman Marcus, Farfetch, and Nordstrom. According to the CPSC, 60 tunics have been sold (presumably all to Kanye West). And thankfully, no one has reported bursting into flames while wearing one. Yet.

Still, TFL notes that, because the CPSC is an American organization, it can’t restrict sales overseas. Which means that international e-tailers like MyTheresa and LuisaViaRoma can still stock Givenchy’s ultrahot goods. Just not too hot, please.

As for how all that couture contraband will be disposed of? We’d highly suggest a bonfire. We’ll bring the marshmallows.
