Have you ever wondered how Snoop Dogg became who he is today? We saw a glimpse of backstory in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, but now, he’s ready to reveal the full picture.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, is working on a biopic. The film is reportedly in the works at Universal Pictures, and it will display his impressive road to fame—from a scrappy teenager who made music while in and out of jail, to a prolific artist who shifted the culture of rap.

“What’s his name? Snoop Dooogggyy Dooooogg,” Universal Pictures tweeted. “That’s right, we’re partnering with the Dogg Father himself to bring his legendary life-story to the big screen.”

In a statement about the project, Snoop said, “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind.”

As it turns out, Snoop decided his own film company is “the greatest,” so he is producing the film for Death Row Pictures. But honestly, can you blame him? Who knows Snoop Dogg's history better than the man himself? As the producer, he’ll be able to fine-tune the project as he sees fit, but the rapper also hired creative reinforcements to bring the film together. Black Panther writer Joe Robbert is on board to write the script, and Menace II Society co-creator Allen Hughes will direct the feature. “It was a perfect marriage,” Snoop said of finding his collaborators. “It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”

Cole expressed his excitement for the project as well. “I’ve been a fan of Snoop since ‘Deep Cover,’” he said. “His music and the films of Allen Hughes left an indelible mark on me over my life. What excited me most is the humanity of Snoop’s journey to international icon. Universal has proven they can guide a movie like this to something special.”

Well, there you have it! One of the industry's most seasoned filmmakers gave his seal of approval. The film appears to be in its early stages, but from the looks of things, it’s destined for success.
