A Theory About How the Squid Game Workers and Players Are Chosen Is Going Viral

Squid Game has officially got us hooked, and it's safe to say we're filled with questions about the show.
However, it looks like the mystery surrounding one pretty huge plot point could be solved, and it's all thanks to a viral theory being shared on TikTok.
To recap, Netflix's new Korean series follows a group of people struggling with financial issues who are invited to take part in a series of children’s games to win a huge sum of money. Only later do they realize that the consequences of losing the games are far more than they could have expected.
Characters in the Squid Game world are divided into workers and players, identifiable by their outfits: red jumpsuits for the workers and green tracksuits for the players. We see how the players end up in the game, but what about the workers?
According to a new theory going viral on TikTok, whether characters end up as workers or players could all depend on the color square they choose at the start of the show.
In the first episode we see the show's main character, Seong Gi-Hun, play a game of Ddakji with an anonymous man in a subway station. When asked to choose between a red and a blue tile, Gi-Hun chooses the blue, along with all the other characters we see selected as players.
We don't see anyone who selected red, but the new theory suggests workers are also selected in a similar way to players, except that they choose the red square.
A TikTok explaining the theory shows the anonymous subway man holding up the tiles, with the text, "He asks him to choose a color." It then shows Seong Gi-Hun alongside the words, "He chooses blue and wakes up as a player".
Then, the TikTok shows a picture of the workers, leaving us with food for thought: "What if he had chosen red?"
It's a pretty plausible theory, and fans in the comments certainly seem to think it adds up. One wrote, "WAIT - that's the reason they say everyone is equal so that must mean the the staff are just people in debt too!" while another added, "This makes so much sense."
