If You've Ever Wondered Why Goofy Can Talk But Pluto Can't, I Have 10 Very Important Theories For You

Hi! My name is Alice, and I'm a Pluto truther. While some people obsess over Roswell and the moon landing, I'm convinced Pluto (the dog, not the planet) is fully capable of standing on two legs and maybe even talking.

I first developed this theory when I visited Disney World in 2007, but I'm certainly not the first person to notice that something is off with Pluto.

The internet is full of people asking why Pluto is the only member of the "Sensational Six" who doesn't walk and talk like an anthropomorphized animal.

Unlike my fellow Pluto truthers who ask why Goofy acts like a human and Pluto doesn't, I'm the only one bold enough to posit that Pluto actually can walk and talk like a human.

To support my theory, I started digging and quickly found some in-universe examples of Pluto walking on his hind legs.

Even beyond the human-sized Plutos walking two-leggedly up and down Disney World's Main Street, the veil has occasionally slipped over the years — like in this scene from Disney's Wonder Dog.

So why doesn't Pluto want to walk and talk on camera?! I ranked 10 theories from least to most likely.

10.Least likely: Pluto is doing some sort of roleplay or cosplay.

I have no evidence for this theory other than my very deep-held belief that something about roleplaying a pet dog comforts Pluto, because he seems to thrive as Mickey's furry four-legged friend.Could puppy play explain his behavior? Yes, insofar as anything could technically answer the question

9.Pluto is a dog, but everyone else is a human who looks like an animal (like Hello Kitty, who is a confirmed human girl).

This theory comes from David Mullich on Quora:

8.Pluto doesn't wear pants, so he isn't allowed to participate in the same pants-mandatory society as Mickey and friends.

Reddit user u/Current_Poster theorized that because

7.Pluto is an untalented "actor."

I think it's possible that Pluto originally auditioned to play the character of Goofy, but he wasn't a very strong actor. Nevertheless, his dazzling good looks and charismatic personality charmed the Disney casting director, so they created a role as Mickey's pet specifically so Pluto could join the main cast despite his subpar acting abilities. Conclusion: POSSIBLE BUT UNLIKELY

6.Pluto is a toddler who tends to run away and get distracted, so Mickey put him on a leash in public for his own safety.

Have you ever come across an unleashed dog whose owner refused to put them on a leash because

5.Pluto is a self-conscious "actor."

You know that phenomenon where most people find it easy to walk and talk without thinking about it until they realize a lot of people are watching? Then all of a sudden they start walking and talking like they just learned how that morning?Maybe that's what happens to Pluto when he's performing, so he requested a role that uses all four legs and doesn't have any lines. This way he can always bring his A-game.Conclusion: POSSIBLE AND DEEPLY RELATABLE

4.Goofy is a class traitor and threw Pluto under the bus for his own gain.

Quora user Jon Mixon posited that

3.Pluto saw how other walking, talking cartoon dogs are treated and wanted no part of it.

Scooby-Doo is forced to fight monsters and ghosts. Droopy Dog is depressed all the time, presumably because he is forced to entertain the masses against his will. And Snoopy FOUGHT THE RED BARON MID-AIR IN WORLD WAR I.If you are a walking, talking cartoon dog, you're forced into some less-than-ideal situations. But if you're a silent, four-legged dog, it's pretty much smooth sailing. Conclusion: POSSIBLE AND KIND OF UPSETTING

2.Pluto realized "work" would be much easier if he remained silent on all fours, rather than having to recite lines on his hind legs.

This theory essentially inverts the logic used in theory #4, but capitalism is still the root cause of the disparity: An Indonesian myth states that orangutans can actually talk but choose not to when people are around, because humans would force the orangutans to work. Perhaps Pluto followed similar logic. Conclusion: POSSIBLE AND A VERY RELATABLE IMPULSE

1.Most likely: Evolution.

Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor, but thanks to evolution, only humans consistently walk on two hind legs and talk. However, monkeys CAN communicate with humans through very limited sign language, and they also occasionally walk on two legs.Similarly, Pluto can perform as an anthropomorphized dog cartoon when necessary, but it's just harder for him than it is for Goofy and the rest of the Sensational Six.This theory is pretty straightforward, and Occam's razor exists for a reason...Conclusion: HIGHLY LIKELY
