The Shop That Put Salted Caramel Ice Cream on the Map?

You made it to Monday afternoon. Good work. Need a sugar fix? Here’s a little ode to a San Francisco sweets shop that arguably put salted caramel ice cream on the map, and it will have you salivating.

Salted caramel, for those unfamiliar with the stuff, is as simple as it sounds. The sweet-and-savory treat has been a favorite among upscale pastry chefs at various points since the late 1990s, and it went mainstream way back in 2008. (In food years, that’s forever ago.) Ever since, you’ll see it folded into apple pies, drizzled over brownies, and layered into chocolate truffles.

But there’s something about salted caramel in ice cream; the mix of salty, sweet, and creamy is just a knockout. The Cooking Channel program “Unique Sweets" pinpoints the Bay Area’s Bi-Rite Creamery as the epicenter of that salty dessert trend.

"One of the first things you notice when you walk into Bi-Rite creamery is their love of caramel," says Cooking Channel personality Brigitte Nguyen in the video below. "You see it everywhere! They make caramel; they sell caramel." And toffee. And pie. And cupcakes. And cookies. And now we’re drooling.

Watch the dreamy video above, and be sure you have something to satiate that sugar craving close at hand.
