Normally, Golden Globe nominees start prepping for the big day the minute their names are announced. They’re on the phone with their stylists, discussing ideas and fabrics and cuts and designers. Not so the case with Kerry Washington, who was up for her role in HBO’s Confirmation.

Here’s the insane story behind the Dolce & Gabbana stunner Washington wore to Sunday’s Golden Globes. It was from the Italian luxury brand’s even more luxe Alta Moda line. And it all came together in literally hours to show up on a major international red carpet.

“Dolce approached me. They thought it would be special. I thought: they should find a special person to do it with. And they said, ‘What about you?” I was humbled and honored. I fell in love with that dress,” Washington tells Yahoo Style.

Normally, Globe attendees have the entire weekend leading up to the Sunday red carpet to get ready, to squeeze in last-minute sartorial nips and tucks. Not so Washington, who also went back to work shooting the new season of Scandal. Which meant her time was at a major premium.

“We had a couple of fittings. We didn’t have a lot of time. The White House party was on Friday night. I was in Washington and we found the dress on Thursday night,” says Washington.

She was in the capital for President Barack Obama’s goodbye gala, where she stayed until the wee hours. She and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha then jetted back to Los Angeles. “Then, on Saturday we did a final fitting,” she says.

Thankfully, she was smitten with the dress (from the same line worn by Kate Bosworth in 2016), it worked, and she didn’t sweat it.

As for the bash, Washington — who campaigned for Obama and was a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities — gets emotional talking about it. “The party was amazing and special and bittersweet. I’m so proud to have served in that administration. To share that closeue with each other — it was very poignant,” she says.
