The Best Ice Cream in America, By The Numbers

We all scream for ice cream, as the old saying goes. But what flavor makes us scream most, and where can we find it?

Preeminent data analyst Hilary Mason used science to determine the best ice cream flavor and where it’s sold in this video for Bon Appetit.

Mason looked at menus at ice cream shops to find the most popular flavors and reviews of such flavors. She also looked at the most popular toppings ordered by people on their ice cream.

“It’s not enough to just get the ice cream, you also have to figure out what composition of toppings goes together nicely,” Mason says.

Not surprisingly, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are the most common flavors. As for toppings, “whipped cream is both well-liked and very common,” Mason determined. But Mason nails down the best ice cream in America to a specific combination of both flavor and add-ons — and both include chocolate.

Watch the video to see how Mason determines the ultimate ice cream flavor and where you can find it.
