You should really stick to skim when ordering your favorite java. That’s because some of the country’s most popular and delicious coffee drinks are padded with major fat and calories. In fact, these coffee drinks are more like dessert gut-bombs than daily infusions of caffeine. For the record, the ever-present Starbucks didn’t even crack the top 10 – its worst offender, the Whole Milk Java Chip Frappuccino – caps its calories at 23 per ounce, less than half of the No. 1 worst coffee drink. Read on to see which drinks ranked the highest in calories per ounce.
5. Coffee Beanery Sugar-Free Caramelatte XL with Half & Half
Don’t be fooled by the Sugar-Free Caramelatte XL with Half & Half. The 20-ounce version contains 868 calories (43.4 per ounce), 465 calories from fat and 39 grams of sugar. A better choice? The fat-free version. It contains just 388 calories.
4. McCafe (McDonald’s) Oreo Frappe
Admit it – we all treat ourselves to Mickey D’s fries and burgers on rare occasions, and the same should go for some of its coffee drinks. Take the 12-ounce Oreo Frappe: At 45 calories per ounce, it’s one McCafe’s most caloric drinks, with 68 grams of sugar and 180 calories from fat.
3. Winchell’s French Vanilla Caramel Cappuccino Chilla
If you order the 20-ounce French Vanilla Caramel Cappuccino Chilla, you’ll ingest a whopping 127 grams of sugar, more than five times the amount the average woman should be consuming a day. That’s on top of 1,040 calories (52 calories per ounce) and 300 calories from fat.
1. AND 2. Krispy Kreme’s Lotta Latte and Mocha Dream
This beloved doughnut shop earns the two top spots: You can eat two to three doughnuts and get the same amount of calories in the chain’s 20-ounce, 1,050-calorie Lotta Latte (tied with the Mocha Dream) drink. At 53 calories per ounce, the Lotta Latte also contains 360 calories from fat and 94 grams of sugar. Opting for the Mocha saves you a scant three grams of sugar, but gets you 10 more calories from fat.
