Texas freshman Matt Coleman outplayed sloppy Trae Young to upset No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners

In a pivotal conference clash when Trae Young struggled to find a rhythm shooting the rock, it was Texas Longhorns freshman guard Matt Coleman who delivered a career-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting to propelled the unranked Longhorns to a 79-74 upset victory over the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners.

Young’s 19 points and 14 assists gave the appearance of a superb performance, but it was his sloppy finish and pedestrian shot selection that was the difference. Overall, Young shot 7-of-22 from the field and drained 2-of-14 attempts from downtown and Oklahoma made only 13 percent of their total attempts (3-of-22) from distance. In the first half, Young made it a priority to facilitate, collecting nine assists. However, the Sooner freshman phenom’s shot remained ice cold in the second half and the Sooners’ offense dried up, giving the Longhorns an opening to rally.

Oklahoma appeared to be cruising toward a victory after Young dished to Jaminu McNeace for a dunk that gave Oklahoma a 66-57 lead with 7:56 left. After that, Young went 0-for-4 shooting and turned the ball over three times, leading to an 11-0 run by the Longhorns to give Texas a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

It wasn’t for a lack of trying. Young split a double team and gave the rock up to Christian James under the basket for an uncontested dunk to slice the Sooners’ lead to 70-68. On the ensuing possession, McNeace had the ball poached by Longhorns center Dylan Osetkowski after corralling a defensive rebound. Osetowski swished a pair of free throws after getting fouled in the process of shooting and pushed the lead back to four.

Oklahoma’s Brady Manek ran off a back pick on the next possession and was fed a lob pass from Trae Young, but the Sooners would never come closer to matching Texas’ score.

The next four possessions would be punctuated by Coleman draining four free throws and a pair of turnovers by Young. His first turnover was triggered by a risky pass in the paint and the second resulted from Young dribbling off of Kerwin Roach’s foot in traffic.

Following an errant line drive from Young, the Longhorns raced out in transition and Eric Davis Jr. lobbed to Mohamed Bamba, who threw the alley-oop down in reverse jam for an emphatic coup de grace.

Texas ended the game on a 22-8 run and Coleman led the way, while Bamba was 4-of-8 with 13 points and cleaned the glass for nine boards.
