Texas A&M, Mississippi State trade wild interceptions on tipped balls
When Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald attempted to throw down the middle Saturday night, he thought his pass would end up in the arms of his waiting receiver. Worst case scenario, he thought, it would fall incomplete.
But as Fitzgerald watched the ball travel through the air, it actually ended up ricocheting off his receiver and back about six yards behind the line of scrimmage — directly to Texas A&M defensive lineman Otaro Alaka, who was in the middle of getting blocked.
Interception of the year?
It’s unclear which part of the body the ball hit for Mississippi State, but it appears to be the leg or shoulder area of the receiver. The interception occurred on the first drive of the game.
In the second half, Mississippi State returned the favor. The Bulldogs were leading 21-7, but A&M looked like it was about to cut into the lead. A&M QB Kellen Mond threw it right into the hands of Damion Ratley, but the pass ricocheted off his hands and then deflected — twice! — off an MSU defender and into the hands of Lashard Durr, who finally brought it in.
Three plays after the interception, Mississippi State extended its lead to 28-7.
