Texans take another failed first-round CB, claim Vernon Hargreaves

Maybe the Houston Texans can get cornerback Vernon Hargreaves to hustle.

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut Hargreaves, following him being benched for not hustling in Sunday’s game, the Texans were awarded the former first-round pick off waivers.

It’s the second time the Texans have acquired a failed first-round pick at cornerback this season. They traded a third-round pick to the Raiders for 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley last month.

Vernon Hargreaves was a bust with Bucs

Hargreaves is a reclamation project, and he has a lot of work to do.

Hargreaves was the 69th-ranked cornerback in Pro Football Focus’ grades among 75 cornerbacks with at least 350 snaps this season.

Hargreaves was the 11th overall pick of the 2016 draft, but he never panned out for the Buccaneers. He hadn’t played well, and then when Bruce Arians felt that Hargreaves didn’t hustle for a tackle, that was the final straw in Tampa Bay.

Texans take a shot

Hargreaves at least lands in a good situation.

The Texans are in first place of the AFC South, but are clearly not happy with their cornerback depth. They’re hoping a change of scenery helps one or both former first-round picks. Conley has played reasonably well in his first two games with the Texans.

The first job for Hargreaves is to not get on the bad side of the Houston coaches by not hustling.
