Texans' Jadeveon Clowney fires agent Bus Cook, reportedly meets with Dolphins' brass

With no movement — and no movement possible — toward a new contract, Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney has fired his agent.

Clowney parts ways with Bus Cook

Via multiple reports, Clowney has fired agent Bus Cook.

Under the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, if Jadeveon Clowney plays this season for the Houston Texans, it can only be on the franchise tag. The two sides had a July 15 deadline to get a long-term extension done.

Since that didn’t happen (and the Texans not having a general manager likely didn’t help matters), Clowney must play on the $15.97 million, one-year, fully guaranteed franchise tag.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Clowney was unhappy with the status of talks about his future.

Earlier this month, Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien said “I don’t know” when asked if he knew when Clowney would be joining the team, though it’s been reported that the three-time Pro Bowler won’t miss any regular season games with Houston.

Met with Miami, but not first choice

If the Texans aren’t going to sign Clowney, they can trade him. He still would have to play 2019 on the tag, though obviously whichever team trades for him has to know that it will likely be committing big money to him beyond this season.

There are two reports saying that the 26-year-old recently met with the Miami Dolphins, including coach Brian Flores.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle writes that the Clowney-Flores meeting went well and that the Dolphins are “very interested” in trading for the South Carolina native.

Clowney would need to be persuaded to join the Dolphins, however, and prefers the Seattle Seahawks or Philadelphia Eagles.
