Teens Re-Create Barack and Michelle Obama’s Famous Outfits for Prom

It’s been quite a year for over-the-top prom inspiration, and high school students Cassie Berta and Seth Moffitt just entered the race for best of the season with an iconic look modeled on President and Mrs. Obama’s at the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2013.

Michelle Obama‘s green, off-the-shoulder gown was created by designer Marchesa, featuring the intricate — yet effortless-looking — draping the designer is known for.

Berta tells Yahoo Style that yes, the couple’s prom look was inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s seriously sophisticated look, saying, “I was on a dress site, and I saw the dress and fell in love. When I saw it I had to have it.”

“When I approached my date,” she explains, “I said, ‘Do you want to just be the Obamas at your prom?’ Because we are both huge admirers of what they did for the country.”

Berta adds: “They’re just a beacon of hope for a lot of people in the U.S. who feel marginalized. They’re really role models for me and my date. [Barack Obama is] the president we grew up with, and he and Michelle showed such strength and humility in office.”

Berta says she found her dress on the website The Celebrity Dresses. The look-alike gown is currently on sale for $159.99.

Berta was clearly feeling her look in her multiple Instagram posts with Moffitt, who sported a tiny USA pin on his notched-lapel tuxedo in tribute to the former president.

Love you to the White House and back,” Berta captioned this snap of the couple.

The young couple are such fans of 44 and his other half that Moffitt’s promposal included an Obama reference as well, which Berta shared on Twitter. His sign read, “I don’t wanna go to prom OBAMA self.”

And how was prom? “It was so much fun,” says Berta, who typically isn’t a big fan of dances.

2017 prom season has truly been no joke, with teenagers across the country using the event to showcase their own personal style.

Aspiring designer teen Maggie McGlenn made her own dress as well as dresses for six of her friends. Another made a grand entrance by being driven to prom in a hearse and emerging from a coffin, and Milan Bolden-Morris — already well known as a Boston College-bound basketball star at her West Palm Beach school — made major waves with a Black Lives Matter-themed dress.
