Taylor Swift surprised fans with the release of her latest album Folklore last night. It opens up with the song "Cardigan", which sets a somber tone for the album. The song compares the singer to a forgotten cardigan and many fans think the lyrics are referencing her over three year romance with Joe Alwyn.

According to Insider, Taylor and Joe reportedly first met at the Met Gala in 2016. The couple have kept their relationship pretty private, but according to US Weekly, the two were thinking about getting married.

Lyrics from "Cardigan" allude to Joe being a bright spot in Taylor's life when she may have been at her darkest. In the song, Taylor sings, "And when I felt like I was an old cardigan / Under someone's bed / You put me on and said I was your favorite." This could be a throwback to all the drama Taylor went through when she and Joe first met.

In 2016, she got into a public feud with Kanye and Kim Kardashian West about Kanye's song "Famous". And, of course, there was that tweet where Kim famously called Taylor a snake.

All of this could be what made Taylor feel like that old, discarded cardigan. But Tay and Joe met that same year. He came along and brought her some happiness.

This isn't the first time Taylor has talked about Joe being there in the midst of the 2016 drama. The song "Delicate" from her album Reputation says, "This ain't for the best / My reputation's never been worse, so / You must like me for me."

Another lyric from "Cardigan" says, "Chase two girls / lose the one" and could be about how Taylor was cheated on by a high school boyfriend. But some of the next lyrics are a huge contrast to that. "I knew you /playing hide-and-seek and giving me your weekends." This could be her way of saying that Joe is different from other men. That he's made her a priority and continues to choose her over other women.

One of "Cardigan's" last lyrics says, "To kiss in cars and downtown bars / Was all we needed / You drew stars around my scars" could speak to the longevity of their relationship and how serious Taylor and Joe have been about each other.
