Taylor Swift Reminded People to Vote on Nov. 6 During Her AMAs 2018 Speech

She also said her award was "motivation for me to be better."

It's been a big week for Taylor Swift and her reputation, both her literal rep (thanks to that political Instagram post) and her most recent album, which earned several awards at the 2018 American Music Awards. And while accepting the American Music Award for Artist of the Year, Taylor used her moment to encourage fans to vote.

"I just wanted to make a mention of the fact this award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people," she said in her speech. "And you know what else is voted on by the people...is the midterm elections on Nov. 6. Go out and vote, I love you guys."

Earlier in her speech for Artist of the Year, she also appeared to allude to her recent Instagram essay, in which she openly supported LGBTQ equality and spoke out against systemic racism.

"Every time you have made me lucky enough to ever stand on a stage with something really sparkly in my hand and say thank you, every single time this happens it means something different to me every time," she said. "And this time it represents encouragement and motivation for me to be better, work harder, and try to make you guys proud as much as I possibly can."

Taylor also talked about what's next for her — and gave away a secret about how Reputation came about.

She explained, "This is actually the first time I ever wrote an album based on a title first. So, the whole time I was writing an album based on all the facets of a reputation and what it actually means to you, I was surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones who never loved me less based on the fluctuations of public opinion."

Taylor went on to hint that she's already working on her Reputation follow-up. "I always look at albums as chapters in my life. And I'm so — to the fans, I'm so happy that you like this one. I'm so happy that this means that you like this one," she said. "But I have to be really honest with you about something: I'm even more excited about the next chapter."
